Multispares Racing Update: Podiums, Night Racing, and Street Circuit Drama
What a wild few weeks of racing for the Multispares team!
From the floodlights of Queensland Raceway to a high-drama weekend on the streets of Townsville, our drivers and crew delivered standout performances across the board.
Dominance at Queensland Raceway: GT4 & Mustang Cup
Round 3 at Queensland Raceway provided spectacular action from day to night. In the Mustang Cup, Josh Anderson continued his clinical form, capturing two pole positions and a dominant race win, comfortably extending his lead at the top of the Mustang Cup championship standings.
In the GT4 category, our two-car Mustang assault took on a thrilling night race on Saturday under sprinkles of rain. Car #27, driven by Supercar drivers Aaron Cameron and Lochie Dalton, handled the tricky conditions beautifully to finish fifth in Race 1. Our second entry, Car #227 with Cameron McLeod and Mason Harvey behind the wheel, fought hard to finish eighth.
The atmospheric night race under the damp conditions made for an absolutely fabulous TV broadcast.
Sunday’s Race 2 brought contrasting fortunes for the garage. Car #27 suffered technical issues that couldn’t be resolved trackside, forcing the boys to fight through adversity to finish eighth. On the other side of the garage, Car #227 had a spectacular run, putting together a brilliant race to storm home in second place and claim a well-earned podium.
Townsville Street Drama: Touring Car Masters
The team then headed north for Round 3 of the Touring Car Masters Championship at the Townsville Street Circuit. Having previously won in Townsville twice, Ryan Hansford and the Multispares Torana crew were looking forward to a massive weekend.
However, Friday started with major drama when track action was temporarily halted due to a bomb threat at the circuit. The resulting schedule shakeup saw the initial practice cancelled. Qualifying was subsequently turned into a practice session, the Trophy Race was cancelled, and an official qualifying session was held in its place.
When qualifying finally got underway, it went right down to the wire. Ryan led the charge for most of the session but was pipped at the absolute end by previous champion Joel Heinrich by a mere five-hundredths of a second. Ryan secured a front-row start in second, just ahead of multiple-winner Steve Johnson in third.
In Race 1, Ryan drove a strong, clean race to take a superb second-place finish. On Sunday, the sheer straight-line speed of the 6-litre engine car driven by Johnson and the NZ Mustang of Angus Fogg with a NASCAR engine proved too much to match on the straights. Despite the horsepower deficit, Ryan drove flawlessly to secure back-to-back third-place finishes in Race 2 and Race 3.
With three ultra-consistent races, Ryan walked away with second overall for the weekend. It was a terrific weekend of maximum effort and a stellar reward for the Multispares Torana crew. Ryan is now 3rd in the championship points overall.
