Tough start for Hansford

Round 1 of the 2024 Tour¬ing Car Masters series was held recently at Mt Panorama, Bathurst as one of the support categories for the Repco Supercar champion-ship.

With repairs on the Multispares Torana being held up over Christmas, the team only got the Torana back 10 days before Bathurst.

The crew worked long hours and got the Torana prepped and ready. Ryan and the crew went to Queensland Raceway on the Sunday afternoon before leaving for Bathurst and the Torana was fast and felt great.

First up on Friday was practice and Ryan was immediately on the pace, setting the fastest time of the session. “Just like in Adelaide and at QR on Sunday, the Torana feels fast and
stable, so I am looking forward to the weekend,” said Ryan. “As is always the case here at Bathurst, Steve Johnson will be the driver to beat, plus with several other fast guys here with 6-litre engine cars here, I will have to make sure qualifying goes well,” added Ryan.

Qualifying was a couple of hours later. Jeremy, Aaron, and Jack gave the Torana a full spanner check, checked the engine data, put on the new tyres, and got Ryan out at the front of the field so that he had a clear track ahead of him.

As expected, Steve Johnson secured the pole position, with Ryan 2nd. Ryan matched Steve across the top of the mountain but up and down the long straights, the Mustang was simply too fast.

Next up on Friday was the reverse grid trophy race, where Ryan started 15th and worked his way to 6th. The trophy race was the first of our 4 races shown live on Fox sports and Kayo and was one of the better reverse grid races with plenty of passing right through the field.

Race 1 and Race 2 were to be held on Saturday, with Ryan starting on the front row for race 1. Ryan got a great start but it wasn’t long until Adam Garwood in the 6 Litre Commodore was on his tail down conrod straight.

Garwood got by Ryan under brakes at “the chase” so Ryan set about trying to hang onto the faster car up mountain straight.

A few laps later Ryan reported on the radio, something not feeling right in the front end. Coming onto the chase later that lap the front right tyre had a big lock up, and then going up mountain straight the tread from the right front peeled off taking the flare and right outside mirror with it.

Somehow the tyre didn’t deflate so Ryan limped the Torana across the finish line to score some points in 15th. Ryan then started 15th in Race 2 and managed to get back to 5th in a terrific drive. See video below.

Race 3 was held just before the top 10 Supercar shootout on Sunday morning with Ryan starting 5th. During the 6 lap sprint, Ryan passed two cars and finished 3rd. That left him 3rd overall in Pro Masters and 8th overall which was a good recovery after finshing 15th in race 1.

Round 2 will be at Barbagallo Raceway in Perth on May 17-19 and the team are confident the tight and twisty track should swing back in the favour of the lighter nimble 5.0L cars.
